The Principal HR Business Partner is an executive-level people partner providing strategic advice and direction, supporting key business initiatives, and ensuring maximum organizational effectiveness. This individual will work closely with executives on strategic people and org decisions, engagement, employee development, policy, compensation, and performance management initiatives. This position is both a strategic and hands-on role that provides full-cycle support. This role is core in executing our talent and HR initiatives, providing excellent support to employees and managers, coaching leaders, and driving people programs and process improvements. This individual will mentor others on the Talent team to help translate business strategy into talent strategy and to grown capability and capacity to support a rapidly growing organization.

Job Responsibilities

  • Provides strategic advisory services to client groups (org design, org performance, coaching, counseling, career development, employee relations)
  • Works closely with leadership to evaluate and proactively drive employee engagement to strengthen Patelco’s organizational culture and enable high performing teams
  • Partners with executives, senior leaders, and mid-level managers to identify and address human capital challenges or opportunities via effective design, development, and implementation of HR practices to support the strategic growth of the business, including (but not limited to) Talent & Succession Planning, Leadership Development, Employee Engagement, etc.)
  • Integrates human capital and organization effectiveness thought leadership into business strategy and execution.
  • Analyzes trends and metrics in partnership with the HR group to develop solutions, programs, and policies. Assesses and anticipates HR-related needs of the organization and/or business units
  • Partners with Talent Acquisition, Talent Development, and HR Operations to effectively execute people strategy for the credit union.
  • Manages and resolves employee relations issues through conducting effective, thorough, and objective investigations. Recommends appropriate action and monitors follow-up by managers and employees.
  • Maintain in-depth knowledge of legal requirements related to day-to-day management of employees, reducing legal risks, and ensuring regulatory compliance
  • Builds relationships and engages workforce at all levels to create open door policy and invite concerns before escalation occurs
  • Develops strong trusting relationships to gain support and achieve results
  • Manages multiple priorities simultaneously


  • Background of at least six (6) years as an HR Business Partner at a mid-large size company partnering with senior-level leadership; and ten (10) years of overall HR or work-related experience.
  • BA/BS in a relevant discipline (human resources, business, psychology, etc.) or relevant experience that demonstrates an ability to influence business outcomes through the development of people.
  • Strong analytical capabilities and an ability to influence with data-driven recommendations to improve performance, retention, and the employee experience.
  • Strong understanding and ability to be highly productive and influential in a fast-paced environment.
  • Experience within the financial industry preferred
  • Strong competency within the HR function including employee relations, coaching, compliance, communications, and change management.
  • Handles sensitive and confidential information appropriately.
  • Excellent consultation skills, client management, and business literacy skills (maintains an effective level of knowledge and understanding about business operations, financials, mid-range plans, etc.)
  • Strong conflict management, interpersonal, and negotiation skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including impactful and effective presentations, with all levels and audiences across and outside the organization
  • Proactive self-starter who works well both independently and collaboratively
