The California Teachers Association, one of California’s largest and most dynamic professional labor associations, seeks an experienced administrative professional to supervise the administrative and program operations of CTA’s Legal Department. This position presents an opportunity for a talented professional to oversee and coordinate all legal support for CTA’s in-house attorneys and to help administer critical legal programs involving CTA members, CTA chapters, and outside law firms. The position is based in CTA’s statewide headquarters in the Bay Area.
The Supervisor manages the Legal Department’s associate/secretarial staff in the effective completion of the department’s work under the direction of the Chief Counsel. The Supervisor also plays a key role in interacting with outside counsel, staff in other CTA departments, and liability insurance program administrators to promote and implement the union’s robust legal programs.

Requirements
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Coordinates implementation of the Legal Department's administrative systems and procedures.
- Develops and implements office procedures including, but not limited to, attorney on-call system, legal case filing procedures, calendar systems, information storage and retrieval, record keeping and case management systems, timekeeping and billing.
- Coordinates and administers the Educators Employment Liability (EEL) policy for CTA members and the Association Professional Liability policy for CTA chapters.
- Assists in administration of CTA’s Group Legal Services Program in accordance with program guidelines, including using specialized case management software, assisting with program audits, and determining union members’ eligibility for legal services.
- Coordinates annual conference of CTA lawyers, including continuing legal education credit logistics.
- May perform or oversee paralegal tasks including Westlaw legal research and case analysis.
- Analyzes trends in the department budget and manages department purchasing and legal library.
- Develops and prepares reports on the status of cases.
- Coordinates training for department staff on computer applications.
- Assigns duties to administrative staff who work in Legal Department offices in Burlingame and Santa Fe Springs, California. Trains and supervises administrative staff in the effective performance of their work.
- Supervises administrative staff in personnel matters, including by approving overtime, compensatory time and leave requests.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications - Minimum Required:
- Four (4) years of paralegal training/experience, legal secretary training/experience, or equivalent; Bachelor’s degree strongly preferred.
- Experience organizing and/or managing the operations of a law office.
- Supervisory experience and/or demonstrated ability to direct work of administrative staff.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to track and efficiently complete numerous complex projects simultaneously.
- Excellent attention to detail.
- Experience with computer software and data processing applications for law offices.
- Highly collegial working style and ability to foster collaboration among staff.
- Valid California driver license.
